This article concerns effective strategies for implementing performance monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) in local government. Implementing PM&E places local government under enormous pressure to deliver and improve. This article is based on a mixed methods study, using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The researchers also applied a thematic-narrative data analysis approach. The research ethical guidelines that informed this study are outlined. The key finding of the research pertains to the management of municipalities in South Africa. Recently, 150 municipalities across South Africa were placed under administration. The research found that an ineffective flow of information in and around municipalities contributes to this finding. The researchers recommend that the municipalities cooperate and support communities, and that performance, monitoring and evaluation should help to improve service delivery, whic
