This study looks at the implementation of the performance management system in the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality. This is because all municipalities in South Africa are required to implement performance management systems in order to improve service delivery to local communities. It looks at the literature on performance management and also the link between performance management and service delivery. The study followed a qualitative approach. Questionnaires were used for data collection. The findings of the research indicate that there is a different understanding of what performance management is amongst the respondents, which could be seen as one of the barriers to the implementation of the performance management system of the municipality.
